Greetings members!
Week sixteen and labor day week has arrived all ready. Labor day is weird concept to me as a farmer because pretty much every day is a day for labor around here but its also my sons birthday weekend so we are taking some time to celebrate Evan turning 13! My kids also have their first full week of school this week so early farm mornings are even busier again! Amazingly all the rains that came through Madison during market Saturday did not give us any precipitation, we’ve gotten one rain all month so far. I was planting radishes and spinach trying to beat the rain but turns out i’ll be soaking them in all week with the sprinklers. We have some exciting new crops for you this week like edible flowers, pea shoots, and habanero peppers and many more of our delicious cherry tomatoes and slicers to name a few things. Here is this weeks crop list.
Nasturtiums/Edible Flowers: Nasturtiums are a beautiful edible flower that comes in many colors but has a floral flavor and spice to it if you eat the whole pod. They are great in salad and also on top of any finished dish. This week is the first time we have been able to have enough for all the shares as the plants have gotten very healthy and spreading out to make lots of blossoms so enjoy this rare treat!
Garlic- Our garlic is well cured and dry so you can store it at room temp. do not refrigerate garlic or get it wet so a room temp dry place out of direct sunlight is best.
Pea shoots- Our microgreens are back this week with pea shoots, with their nice mild pea pod flavor they make a great salad and are good on sandwiches, and tacos, and great for salad.
Green pepper -Sweet pepper will be in the shares this week and go great with some of your favorite protein for tacos or stuffed peppers.
Curly Kale: Our kale is still rocking and makes a good salad or saute green!
Cherry tomatoes- Our cherry tomatoes are still so healthy and productive so more of them coming this week
Heirloom Tomato – These are sldowing down a lot but we should have a few for everyone yet this week!
Habanero Pepper: Just one of these goes a long way to providing lots of sweet heat.
Shishito Chile pepper: These japanese chilies are great blistered or roasted but one csa member sent me a recipe for creamed shishito so there are a lot of possibilities out there for recipes, use the web and find something creative and fun!
Thats everything we can do this week! We have two weeks of the regular CSA left after this one, one week for bi-weekly members which will be next week on week 17, and then one more week for full season members to finish off the summer on week 18. Market members can continue to spend any remaining balances at all our market locations through October and mid-november downtown. Until next week then folks, have a great holiday weekend and see you soon.
