This week we are going to try and get microgreens going again for shares next week and start some fall crops in the field by doing some seeding. I’m still trying to finish the new greenhouse site picking roots out of the ground and there is one big tree stump i’m trying to remove by picking away at it slowly. I may have to hire someone to come in with an excavator to remove it. We’ve been picking tomatoes every other day and there have been a lot of them but looks like we are through the main incoming large tomatoes but cherry tomatoes should keep pace this week. Sweet peppers are almost ready but still taking their sweet time 🙂 My old weedwacker broke this last week too so I went and got a new one while its in repair but i’m trying to get all the mowing done so no weeds go to seed out there either. Also I went to the town hall and made my case for building a shed/barn and it got approved so this week the trusses and everything got ordered and the building site will be prepped immediately upon CSA ending and I will take down the walk in cooler and move things out of the way as much as possible except the greenhouse parts should be coming in by then too so we will have quite the construction site this fall. The improvements will help increase our production space and washing and packing space to be more efficient and worker friendly and protect our tools from rusting out. … Here is this weeks crop list.
Curly Kale: Our kale is packed with vitamins and good for sauce or salad when massaged with some oil…. add some pea shoots, or seasonal fruits and cheese to make it even more flavorful and interesting.
Garlic: Our garlic is good with everything you could create in the kitchen and fully cured and dry with good flavor. No need to refrigerate just store dry at room temperature.
Cherry Tomato: These are still just as juicy and sweet as the first week they started coming in. The plants look healthy but they are also slowing down some at the moment although i expect more flushes coming soon so we shall see how they keep performing. They’ve been keeping us busy lately so more likely i’m just noticing patterns in the cycle of fruit set and ripening since I work with them nearly every day! We will give you all as many as we can muster.
Tomato: Slicers for your sandwiches, salsa, pasta, sauce, or just plain eaten like an apple with a little salt as one customer told me last week. These are starting to slow down for the season which is why we loaded everyone up on these wonderful summer fruits the last 6-7 weeks but the amount of these coming in now will go down every week in this last quarter of the season.
Shishito Pepper: These chilies are great sautéed until they blister brown with just a little olive oil and sea salt. try them on a pizza with cherry tomatoes, or a taco with cojita cheese and ground beef.
Jalapeno pepper: just a little extra spice for your life.
Bell Peppers: Green bell peppers are here for your enjoyment. I usually like to wait for these to turn color but the plants on one variety have lost some foliage so I will start harvesting them tomorrow else we lose them to sun scald.
Either Zucchini and yellow zucchini will be in shares again this week. Enjoy them while you can cause they will be done very soon.
Basil: Great to go with your tomatoes, and stir fries with zucchini and peppers kale and garlic over rice or whipped into pesto. with or without some garlic for a great homemade flatbread spread with tomato and zucchini slices for homemade pizza!
Thats all the crops from this mid summer August week folks. Enjoy all the summer fruits, greens, herbs and garlic and see a lot of you at the dropsites soon. Thank you, be healthy, and enjoy! -Kyle
