Greetings members!
Week sixteen and labor day week has arrived. Labor day is weird concept to me as a farmer because pretty much every day is a day for labor around here but its also my sons birthday weekend this year so we will take some time to celebrate Evan turning 12! The kids start school on Wednesday this week! Its been warm and I’m looking forward to a cool down but we are striving as always daily to harvest and distribute. Amazingly all the rains that came through did not give us almost any precipitation, we’ve gotten one rain all month so far. I”m pretty proud of what we’ve been able to keep up on considering the dryness which has hindered some things growing well this summer. Also we are working to improve water and soil health, clean food, and sustaining natural habitats for not just mammals but insects and birds is all part of a good organic system and even though this farm is small every act count in creating an impact on the future world we want to see and live in, and what we will be eating quite frankly! The beauty in it comes slowly over time with investment in this work and labor and this week we continue on with that mindset and lean deeper into the journey this farm has taken with it’s direction since it’s conception in 2007. Small steps will lead us to more productive fields and healthier more productive crops to feed the people. I hope everyone of you has a great holiday weekend and last week of summer…. We have some exciting new crops for you this week like poblano chili peppers, green beans, and eggplant! Here is this weeks crop list.
Swiss Chard – This may be the last week of chard but we wanted to try and switch it up from kale for you all this week.
Green Beans – We got some beans in! These thick traditional green beans stay tender when chopped up and cooked with some butter and garlic they taste even better i think.
Garlic- Our garlic is well cured and highly sought after at farmers market with great flavor.
Pea shoots- Our microgreen this week is pea shoots, with their nice mild pea pod flavor they make a great salad and are good on sandwiches, and tacos, and more.
Sweet pepper -Sweet pepper will be in the shares this week and go great with some of your favorite protein for tacos or
Pablano Chile – This dark green chile has great flavor. So many good ways to use these in Mexican dishes or roasted on the grill, or stuffed with beef cheese and some sauce like adobo sauce, tomatoes, or garlic, and baked in the oven which my absolute favorite.
Cherry tomatoes- Our cherry tomatoes are still so healthy and productive so more of them coming this week
Heirloom Tomato – These are sldowing down a lot but we should have a few for everyone yet this week!
Summer Squash and Zucchini – yellow and green zucchini and patty pan squashes for your stir fries, fajitas, pizza, baking, zucchini fries and more.
Eggplant – Our first picking of eggplant will be this week but i’m not sure how much we have since its been so dry they haven’t made a lot of fruit yet so if we have to we may limit it to large shares only, and then if there is enough we will give some to small share members also.
Thats everything we can do this week! Enjoy the poblano chilies, they are one of my favorites! If your unfamiliar they are not very hot at all, especially with the seed removed they are more like a green pepper with good chili flavor. We have two weeks of the regular CSA left after this one, one week for bi-weekly members which will be next week on week 17, and then one more week for full season members to finish off the summer on week 18. (https://winandoffice.com/) Market members can continue to spend any remaining balances at all our market locations through October. Until next week then folks, have a great holiday week and see you soon.
