Greetings members! This last week or so was hot and tiring and we didn’t get any rain on the farm unfortunately. Our summer produce really liked the heatwave ok though. This week we keep the summer harvest rolling into the school year as my daughter has returned home from her moms for the school year and we are super busy now with soccer and school starting this week It’s all I can ask for to get a little rest in between all those things but the veggies keep coming and so we will keep right on with them. Here is the list for this weeks harvest on the farm.
Kale- Curly Kale is back this week and looking better then ever since we gave it some time to size up. I really like a nice kale salad and there are so many ways to make it. Find one that suits your fancy and enjoy a nutritionally dense salad.
Summer squash and/or zucchini – These amazing fruits just keep coming and we will distribute either one yellow patty pan, yellow squash or zucchini in your share.
Cherry tomato – So many cherry tomatoes coming in still and they taste just as good as the first week and almost as large. Plenty to go around as these have been keeping us busy in the greenhouse picking as fast as we can bring them in.
Heirloom tomato, these slicing size tomatoes are slowing down more now in most types and getting down there on varieties and quantity available but we should have enough for another week or two of tomatoes for you all.
Sweet peppers- The peppers we grow are varieties i’ve found to be reliable over the years and includes red and yellow Italian frying peppers, and orange and yellow and red bell peppers and possibly a few green peppers too. We will provide a mix of peppers this week.
Jalapeno- Just the right amount of spicy to add to your favorites dishes. Carefully remove the seeds to make even less mild but the oils can be hot so do keep that in mind before handling them.
Garlic- Our garlic is on point with great flavor this season, it really pairs well with anything you can dream up in the kitchen
Pea shoots- Our most classic and first micro green ever produced here is a good staple to use for salads, sandwiches, taco salad, and more, be creative and enjoy the sweet pea pod flavor of these micro greens.
Carrots: These orange carrots are topped and bagged for you now. We are getting lower on carrots now so enjoy them while we still have them or store them well in a bag keeping them humid in the fridge.
Basil: Fresh Basil for your stir fries or to go with your tomatoes.
This week I really hope we get some rain, its been an extremely challenging year with the heat and lack of precipitation. We are barely keeping on track with harvesting as the remaining crew is worn thin after the long hot summer and some have left for school and some just don’t show up so we’ve been running short of help the last few weeks which is not uncommon late in the year but still pushing through like always so that’s good! Its just to warm to keep up with the crop watering without any help from nature so let’s all do a rain dance and keep our fingers crossed. This newsletter is going out a little late this week because we have been really busy at home dealing with a family pet who some of you farm pick up members may have met is sick. We found out last Monday (Rebel the cat) has heart disease and will most likely be passing very soon so we’ve been a little concerned with his health this week but he’s comfortable and doing ok for the moment. Let’s all wish him the best in his battle with this heart disease. Thank you all for being CSA members once again and we will see some of you at the dropsites. Thank you. -Kyle
