What’s in the Box: Salad mix (Lettuce only), savoy spinach, easter egg radishes, bak-choi, joi-choi, rhubarb.
What’s going on at the farm: We made it to the first week of shares so first I would like to welcome everyone! As usual our first box of the year includes many fresh and tender greens. Choi is best for a saute green and both are good with rice or in a stir fry. There has been and will be a lot of planting going on here through the late spring and summer. It was a cold wet spring this year but we have managed to stay ahead of our planting schedule and are all caught up. Normally we like eight crops to make the box but the cool weather along with a surprise late couple of frosts has slowed some of the crops down. We are loading people up on spinach and salad mix this week so enjoy your salads, and maybe try some quiche or spinach pie! There are many more crops on the way though. In May so far we have planted many tomatoes, strawberries, shallots, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, celery, onions, eggplant, leeks and more. It’s been go, go, go, every day all day but that is normal for a CSA farm. Being a small farm We do everything by hand so it takes longer to do each job than if we had mechanization. We are getting strawberries developing so there should be a nice crop of berries soon as well. We expanded our strawberry field this month too so I am hoping it is a crop we will keep expanding on. Some other crops coming in the next couple weeks will include kohlrabi, kale, lettuce heads, swiss chard, strawberries, sugar snap peas, and garlic scapes. Other crops we will be planting over the next couple weeks include melons, winter squash, carrots, dill, okra, and hopefully some sweet corn if we can find the space for it. Remember you can use our veggie ID section on the website to identify your veggies visually if you need to. The veggie ID photo’s and weekly box photo’s will be updated weekly by a photographer in order to help with this as well. Hope everyone enjoys the first week and i’ll be seeing most of you at the drop sites.
