What’s in the Box: Purple kohlrabi, salad/lettuce mix, joi-choi, buttercrunch lettuce heads, red russian kale, and spinach.
What’s going on at the farm: This week is a pickup week for full season members only, this means that if you are a Standard or Basic share you pick up but bi-weekly or half share members have the week off and will pick up again next week. It was another productive and tiring week of work on the farm. So many weeds were pulled from the cabbages, broccoli, and kohlrabi. We planted watermelon, cantaloupe, and sun jewel melons in the field. All our greenhouse tomatoes were pruned and clipped and we delivered the first shares of the season and attended three farmers markets and so the harvest and delivery season will go weekly. The greens are loving this cool weather and there are plenty more to enjoy this week. Spinach is one of my personal favorites and we have quite a bumper crop right now so there is plenty of it to go around. Kale is new this week and is also looking great. Kale is considered to be a superfood by many and is very tasty used as a warm salad green slightly wilted. It can be chilled as well and pairs well with sesame, olive oil and soy for dressing. Buttercrunch lettuce and kohlrabi are new this week as well and they go well together for a crunchy salad. Overall our crops are looking great this year and we are getting very close to harvesting some other new crops over the next couple weeks including zucchini, summer squash, chioggia beets, green kohlrabi, strawberries, sugar snap peas, garlic scapes, broccoli, swiss chard, and lettuce heads. On a side note from CSA we are providing some spinach and salad as well this week to a local elementary school for part of a farm to school nutrition program in Rock County and we are happy to have the opportunity to provide healthy greens for local kids/schools! I hope everyone enjoys all the crunchy spring goodness!
