Week nine now, were mid season and the rain came against this time with heat and humidity, its quite the work when its so hot and muggy out let alone regular temps but i’m getting it done. Microgreens harvests have been going along well and i’m getting batches growing every week but i got new harvesters which are improving yields and harvest time for me so thats good! I caught up on all the tomato tying this week also before the heat came and trying to stay ahead of watering during this stretch. This week we have these organic crops coming for you….
Kale: The backbone of the farm kale is probably the most nutritious green also packed with clean proteins. This curly variety makes great kale chips or italian kale soup also.
Radish Microgreens: These spicy greens taste just like a fresh radish and are great on salads, in sandwiches, on tacos, or fish, or on top of ramen stir fry.
Chioggia Beets: These are the featured item this week the inside is white with red stripes and they don’t bleed like red beets do. The greens are fantastic on these also when you sautée them with olive oil and or butter. I like the roots roasted in the oven with your other favorite veggies or just on their own with your favorite flavors added. Just 40 minutes or so in the oven at 350 stirring occasionally works well.
Swiss Chard: Our swiss chard is doing good this year, a nice little crop rotation helped everything grow better. I like sautéing this with eggs for frittatas in the am and basically use it as you would spinach or the beet greens. We have the red stem, white stem and pink stem type growing.
Fennel: Baby Fennel bulbs good for roasting or for slaw with the kohlrabi if you grate it up.
Kohlrabi: Purple kohlrabi comes back this week for our third week of kohlrabi in a row, thats a world cup kohlrabi hat trick! just kidding but these crunchy roots don’t play around with their sweet flavor and crisp texture. I like them raw for slaw or a snack sliced up but feel free to look up some recipes
This week is another long and very hot work week for us on the farm but as we pass mid season of CSA its actually been 5 straight months of work in my 20th straight year! I have sent out second payment links to those of you who need to pay for your second half so please do so this week and thank you to those of you who all ready have and thanks all for helping your farmer stay employed! Thank you all again for your patronage and i’ll see some of you at the drops, have a good week and happy independence, 4th of July to you all! -Kyle
