Hey there CSA members!
This week has been a hot one! Im practically flying through socks and t shirts as fast as I can sweat through them. Luckily I have done this before also and can pace myself through the heat by working early and late as much as possible. Growing everything is challenging in the heat as most plants like it around 85, temps over that get stressful even for plants not to mention farmers. I hope it’s been a great 4th of July for everyone in Americas 250th year. I’m working on pruning and tying the tomatoes again this week and then plowing in the beet field as soon as possible and planting radishes and things for late summer/fall is my goal. Eggplant, peppers and tomatoes are all behind this year but coming along slowly.
Lacinato kale, Our Lacinato kale is great for salad or cooking. When using it raw its best to massage the greens with some oil to tenderize it a bit for salad.
Chioggia Beets: These Italian heirloom beets, pronounced (Kee-oh-jah), are incredible in looks and flavor and won’t turn everything red like traditional beets. The greens are incredible when cooked up also and taste similar to spinach so you can use them for spanakopita or lasagna or anything you would use cooked spinach in!
Micro Broccoli: This week we will switch up the greens for all shares from radish micro to broccoli! I love the broccoli on pasta, even a simple bowl of mac and cheese turns incredible when you top it with micro broccoli.
Green Kohlrabi: These crunchy roots are good raw or cooked and the name kohlrabi means cabbage apple in german so that explains the sweet and crunchy flavor and texture.
Sorrel: Our second round of the sorrel this season, some of our customers have said they really like it with fish! It would be good in a cold pasta salad for lemon flavors also or maybe a tabouli salad.
