Welcome to week #7 everyone! We finally got some rain this week! I thought it would never happene but it rained twice in one week! we are still way behind for the year but the temps seem to be a little more moderate as we recover from strawberry season and the heat wave so that’s good. Some early summer crops are starting to come in that we worked hard on this spring to have ready by July like tomatoes, but there are not quite enough this week for everyone so probably one more week on those I’m guessing and two at most. Cucumbers and zucchini are coming in now more steadily now that we got some rain also. I plowed in a lot of weeds this week which is a constant battle in organic farming. This week we have another nice share for you all including the list below…
Scallion/Green onion: These tender green onions can be used in their entirety from base to tip of the leaf. The variety we grow is very large and gives a lot of onion to go around.
Swiss Chard: Our chard comes in peppermint stick, rainbow, and deep red. It can be used anywhere you would use spinach and is a good substitute for it.
Kale: Curly kale is going strong and we also have a deep red merlot type ready now. we will try to distribute that with the green curly this week so you may end with either deep red or green curly kale.
Beets: Golden beets are our beet this week, these gold colored roots are so sweet you can eat them raw and they have very little of that earthy beet flavor…. I like them best roasted.
Sunflower Shoots/Micro green: our sunflower shoots are great for salads, sandwiches, wraps, or just a fresh snack they are back this week after we had a lot of trouble producing micros through the extreme temps. These are crunchy and nutty and will be the first time we have had them in shares this year I believe so enjoy!
Cucumber: There should be enough to give everyone one or two of these crispy fruits to help you stay cool during this hot weather or add to a kale salad. If you get any brown checking on the skin that is from insect damage and should peel right off if you peel your cucumber. I usually do if there is checking otherwise the skins on our cucumber are thin and totally edible so I don’t peel them if they aren’t damaged.
Kohlrabi: We have three varieties of kohlrabi in purple, white and green and members will get 1-2 types this week. I always get questions at market about if the different colors taste different but the flavor of these is pretty similar imo. They re great raw as a snack or cooked.
Zucchini or summer squash. There should be enough this week to get everyone a baby squash or two. Normally we have them earlier in the year but all the late frost this year kept nipping our plants and setting them back a bit so it will be close on how much there is to go around this week but we will do our best as they pick up pace in growth with the recent rain.
That’s the eight delicious veggie items coming this week folks, Its possible that I may add a crop if there are not enough cukes, or zukes but otherwise we should be good. enjoy the bounty of our efforts here at the farm and we will keep on trucking through to bring on the veg! Thank you all for being members and enjoy!
