Hello members,
Week one had us washing and packing a lot of fresh greens! This week will be very similar with plenty of greens still in season and the late spring/early summer crops not quite ready yet. We are patiently awaiting the first strawberries and started to see some color change this week and picked half a pint yesterdays so it looks like next week for those! We pulled a lot of weeds on our carrots, lettuce, garlic, broccoli, and kale, and trimmed all the tomatoes and clipped them up. We harvest and started batches of micros as we do weekly and trained a new employee to work farmers market and started a new market in Janesville on Saturdays. We also started hundreds of cantaloupe vines and transplanted watermelons on to larger pots and our hemp crop and got a new product packaged up which will be available starting next weekend which is our Cannafruit CBD Chews. They are a strong and excellent tasting CBD edible good for anxiety and better sleep and less pain and inflammation among other health benefits. Just ask at market or by email for any more info on them but all of us here worked overtime this weekend to get them packaged and ready and we are very excited about them and how they turned out over a year of growing and product development after starting the seed to produce the extract for these last April! This week I will also be planting green beans and trimming and clipping lots of tomatoes that are looking beautiful and all ready making green fruit! If you haven’t been in our CSA before you should know we love tomatoes and there will be lots of tasty cherries and larger fruits coming this summer.
Choi and Joi Choi– this asiatic cabbage family vegetable has crispy green stems, and rich dark green leaves and we also have a larger white stemmed version called Joi Choi, both will be in shares this week. They are great sautéed, steamed, or grilled if you wrap them up. Don’t overcook the stems too long if you like the crisp texture. They are easy to clean once you cut the base off and allow the leaves to separate so you can wash out any dirt at the base of the stem.
Spinach – Spring spinach is deep green with good rich flavor, i like it cooked down as a side green or in pasta, or you can use it for salads
Pea Shoots – These micros are great for raw use or lightly sautéed at the end of a dish. One cup of pea shoots has almost half your daily vitamin C and 654 percent of your vitamin K! They are also high in plant proteins and fiber but much healthier than lettuce and with a nice sweet flavor.
Lettuce mix – this weeks salad mix is a green and red leaf blend of all lettuce. great for salads.
Kale blend – Our kale mix has 5 types of kale and is smaller than full size and first pick tenderness in the leaves makes it great for raw salads or used as a sauce green. I eat the stems and all but you can de stem it for salads or cooking if you prefer that.
Cilantro – Our fresh herb this week is cilantro! The flavor is outstanding on this because of the freshness… such a difference between this fresh picked and the stuff at the store. I eat it in my salads to spruce up the flavor or use it as a sauce blended with oil and garlic for tacos!
I hope everyone has their favorite salad dressings and stir fry recipes ready for this healthy week of spring greens. Remember bi-weekly members are off this week. Market share members I will be at Madison’s E Side Farmers Market On Tuesday and Fitchburg Market on Thursday if you want to come pick out some veggies we will have all the items listed above at market those days and also Saturday at Alliant Energy Center for Dane County Farmers Market if your a market share member! The address and times for those markets are listed on the main page of our website. Thank you all and I’ll see some of you at the drop sites. Have a great week. -Kyle
