Greetings members!
Week sixteen and labor day week has arrived. Labor day is weird concept to me as a farmer because pretty much every day is a day for labor around here. So much work to complete and most people aren’t able to see the beauty in working hard for others and loose track of the benefits we are striving so hard to improve. Water and soil health, clean food, and sustaining natural habitats for not just mammals but insects and birds is all part of a good organic system and even though this farm is small every act count in creating an impact on the future world we want to see and live in. It’s been an exciting trend here over the years to see less insect pressure and disease from practices like crop rotation being implemented but its not the type of thing that gratifies us instantly like a shiny new object or piece of art. The beauty in it comes slowly over time with investment in this work and labor and this week we continue on with that mindset and deeper into the journey this farm has taken with it’s direction since it’s conception in 2007. Small steps will lead us to more productive fields and healthier more productive crops to feed the people. Here is this weeks crop list.
Kale- This week we have red and green curly kale, most members will get red curly kale but some will get green curly kale.
Garlic- Our garlic is well cured and highly sought after at farmers market with great flavor. We grow two types. German extra hardy and Asian Tempest. The tempest has dark purple stripes and usually more cloves then the German. Both have great flavor but the tempest is a little spicier.
Pea shoots- Our microgreen this week is pea shoots, with their nice mild pea pod flavor they make a great salad and are good on sandwiches, and tacos, and more.
Sweet peppers – A mix of sweet peppers will be in the shares this week of our yellow and orange and red sweet peppers in varying shapes and sizes. The real small peppers in the box are likely the hot peppers below.
Habanero- These bright orange hot peppers pack a lot of heat and flavor. Please do be careful cooking with these as the oils can burn fingers, eyes, and get on cutting boards and knifes so be aware when using these.
Jalapeno- Great green chile flavor from these chili peppers will lend
Cherry tomatoes- Our cherry tomatoes are still so healthy and productive so more of them coming this week
Kohlrabi- Our purple kohlrabi is good for coleslaw and snacking but would also be great for salads and roasting.
Other crops that may make the box this week include squash and zucchini, radishes, salad turnips, and tomatoes. I had another employee quit last minute this week so stuck in a bit of predicament without enough help or time to figure it out so I will do what I can to do the most for you all this week and add crops to this list with what we have and all my energy and hustle. Our peppers, garlic and tomatoes are some of the best around so that will be the focus and that kale will keep you energized with vitamins and protiens. Enjoy!
