Hello CSA members!
Week thirteen brings us into the middle of August and if you have kids at home like me then we are also getting very close to the new school year, and the last few weeks of summer break for them. It’s hard to imagine summer ending but luckily the summer veggies are still here for a while longer. One of the tomato houses is all ready slowing down a lot. Soon we will clear out the vines to make room for fall planting. Unfortunately we lost a lot of our watermelons when they were ripening and the last rain hit it caused about half of them to split open on the vine while ripe and they basically just rot off at that point. Its sad to see after working so hard on them for months but not abnormal to have a loss at some point in the season. Some new greens crops are coming in this week to enjoy though, here is the list for this week.
Mustard greens: These fancy green mustards are great for salads and hearty enough to grow in the summer heat. The can also be used as a cooking green.
Sweet Pepper: The first sweet peppers are coming in and i’m thinking we should have enough this week to give everybody some. We have a variety of peppers growing including yellow bell peppers orange bell peppers, red bell, Red Italian pepper, and yellow Italian peppers. The variety we distribute will be mixed throughout the late summer pepper season.
Heirloom tomato: Hold onto your bacon and make sure the olive oil and sea salt are readily available for these sweet and meaty fruits. This week i’m enjoying them at home with fresh burrata cheese and cucumber.
Cherry Tomatoes: Our blend is full of 7 types of cherries and they have really good sweetness and are holding pretty well for us. I think we hit a peak last week and this cooler weather will slow down tomatoes a little this week.
Garlic: our garlic crop just keeps getting larger every year I think and this year was not disappointing. Enjoy the rich flavor of this organically grown garlic.
Yellow carrots: These store really well in a plastic bag in a humid place but they are great roasted up or steamed and served with butter.
Sunflower shoots or Pea shoots: Members will receive the weekly share of microgreens in either sunflower or pea shoots.
Tomatillo: I had these roasted in a pan in the oven with garlic this week and then blended them into a sauce with cilantro and lime juice.
Cucumber: Nothing like a crispy hydrating fruit in the heat of summer to keep you ticking.
Jalapeno: Hot pepper to spice up your tomatillo, tomato, stir fry and salsa
Thats it for this week folks. we have some other specialty crops available at the stand for market share members or if anyone is interested also this week including ground cherries, eggplant, habanero peppers, watermelon, micro arugula broccoli and spicy mix and shisito peppers. Enjoy the shares everyone and stay safe and healthy out there! -Kyle
