Hello CSA Members!
We are heading through the middle of the season the next few weeks. Summer heat and storms keep it humid and exciting out in the fields as we keep bringing in the summer harvest from the fields. It’s that time of year when your farmer is feeling the burn and the weeds grow even faster. This time of year and it takes a lot of effort to work on all the mowing and weed wacking and keep them from seeding. Our garlic crop is almost cured and ready but we got it all in last week and it looks great. This week the cherry tomatoes are really hitting stride and one of the highlight of summer if you ask me. Here is the crop list for week nine!
Cherry Tomatoes: I built a greenhouse specifically to grow these in back in late 2018 which required some tree removal to prep the site over several years prior and then 6 months of construction before it was finally finished. Its awesome to see the results in the crops after all that work and the flavor and texture on these tomatoes is as good as it gets. They make a great cypress, a healthy snack, and I like them for veggie kabobs in the summer too.
Heirloom tomato: Our slicing tomatoes could quite possibly be better then our cherry tomatoes but you can be the judge of that. Great for blts, sandwiches, salads, or even stuffed.
Napa cabbage: Im really excited about these because it is a totally new crop for us and never been grown before here. They came out pretty decent for a first try. They should be stored humid in the fridge in a bag or crisper and try to use them sooner then later as this is not really a storage cabbage but a tender crisp cabbage great for stir fries and saute.
Yellow carrot: These golden yellow roots are stocky and store well. They will keep several months in the fridge as long as they are humid.
Zucchini: These fruits are great for a gluten free pizza crust i put in the newsletter a few weeks ago. They make great bread, or my favorite is grilling them in spears and marinated.
Summer squash: These are prepared the same as zucchini, even the cute saucer shaped ones.
Cucumber: These crispy fruits are really taking off in the heat this week and tasting great. Cucumber is very hydrating and good for the body especially when its hot out and makes the perfect snack combined with some sea salt.
Pea shoots: Tasty sweet shoots for salads, sandwiches or even snacking.
Kale: Curly kale is going strong and looking great. Kale is a superfood as I’m sure most of you know and I can even get my kids to eat it all up if I make kale chips with it in the oven. There are many good versions of this recipe so as with most stuff its best to google it and find something that sounds appealing to you. I like mine with garlic and olive oil. I also had it in a tasty coleslaw this week with cabbage, and carrots.
Thats all the crops we have for this week folks! We are bringing in as much as we can and working every day to bring the best veggies we can to you and I hope everyone is making some delicious food! If you don’t follow the farm on instagram or facebook all ready you can follow us there too and see our progress or even tag the farm in your delicious home cooked meals! Have fun and enjoy! -Kyle
