Hello CSA Members!
June is flying past with a mix of weather and summer is officially here. We’ve got a great crop mix this week for you this week. Between all the harvesting and washing of crops coming in we were able to plant another planting of lettuce this last week along with a variety of watermelons and some napa cabbages. I planted green beans that are sprouting after the rains too and it’s our first year ever attempting to grow sweet corn which is just now sprouting in the field.
This week in boxes we have a great list of crops for you and some of my favorites including.
Strawberries: I don’t think i need to describe many suggestions for uses of these deep red organic vine ripe berries we like to eat them with cream or whipping cream. We have two varieties of berries, one is smaller and sometimes more tart and a larger berry which is new this year.
Kohlrabi: There are purple, white, and green kohlrabis coming in so you will receive a random selection from those. They can be enjoyed raw once they are peeled and sliced up or are great in a slaw or cooked in cream or butter.
Romaine lettuce, these heads are huge and crispy stalked.
Red leaf lettuce: These beautiful frilly heads will pair well in contrast with the green romaine lettuce
Chioggia beets: These two toned beets have concentric rings in a ring pattern inside the beet, they don’t bleed like a red beet and they have nice balance of flavor between sweet and earthy.
Pea shoots: Our micro green this week is pea shoots and they are great in salad with your lettuce or used on the top or side of any dish really.
Zucchini: The zucchini and summer squash is coming in and everyone should get 1-3 of these this week.
Kale: Curly kale has really put on some size this week and we have some beautiful vitamin rich curly kale coming in shares this week. My kids will eat it if I make kale chips out of it and that is a great way to go if you shred it up and bake it slow lightly oiled and seasoned at 200 degrees for 20-30 minutes or so and remember to keep checking it and turning it a bit.
Thanks everyone and enjoy the early summer crops! There is just not enough time in a day even with these longest days fo the year right now. I’m going to get back outside and get back to work and stay focused on growing so we can get you all fed with some good food. Eat well and be well! -Kyle
