Hello CSA members,
Week one had me washing and packing a lot of fresh greens! This week will be very similar with plenty of greens in bountiful amounts. The 2000 berry plants we put in last year are just starting to make fruit and it’s been a cooler spring so everything is a week or two behind last year despite starting at the same time because we are dealing with drought for the third year in a row. There may be a gap in spring production because of this but well see, i’m doing my best to get things to grow only so much water to go around though. This week on the farm I worked on micros and weeding as well as harvesting and cleaning all the food and flipping a greenhouse into tomatoes which are behind this year also I will finish planting the last of the peppers and eggplant next. I hope everyone is having a great Mothers Day Weekend and enjoys the food! Here is what’s coming!
Radish: Red spring radishes are great with all the greens for salads or just as a fresh snack. You can use the greens like arugula and we wash and bunch them pretty well in the bubble washer so they should be ready to prepare.
Pea Shoots: These microgreens are sweet and mild with a pea flavor. They are packed with vitamins and great in salads, on sandwiches, or to top a strir fry after you plate it up.
Green Onions: These fresh onions are sweet enough to eat raw and very tender being grown in the greenhouse early for you all. My only tip is don’t overcook them if you do cook with them i like them diced up on fried rice also.
Crisp Lettuce: this is a new red and green lettuce for me this year and featured the next few weeks for your salads, sandwiches, and wraps.
Spinach: I saved the last of the spinach spring crop for you this week enjoy the rich greens!
Gem lettuce: the last of the spring gems, unfortunately a rabbit ate my outdoor crop up the last week or we would have more coming next week. Any suggestions on what to do about wild animals let me know they driving me crazy.
Edible Flowers: These are for large shares only this week to increase share value along with a flower pot of edible flowers for your patio.
I hope everyone has their favorite salad dressings and recipes ready for this healthy week of spring greens. Remember bi-weekly members are off this week. Market share members your CSA is good at any market stand which is listed on the main page except for dcfm (no longer there) where you will find most of the above crops available. I am also in Monona at Farmers Market on Sunday mornings now. Thank you all and I’ll see some of you at the drop sites. Have a great week!
