Hello CSA Members!
It was so hot out this week and although a lot of people got a lot of rain we barely got any once again at the farm less than a tenth of an inch and so we are still in drought conditions. I managed to get a good batch of microgreens grown in the heat which is a challenge and i’ll be continuing to feature these this year as its one of my best products in popularity and has good value in the share and nutritionally. Also something I can manage well over the challenging season. I was excited for loads of organic peaches this august but my peach tree literally split and collapsed under the weight of the fruit in the high winds, fingers crossed some works out but won’t be a large crop like i expected. This week we harvested a lot of early summer crops for your shares and did a lot of tomato trimming and weeding. we also had summer solstice which marks the longest days of the year! I hope everyone gets out and enjoys some outdoor activities this week after getting energized with some healthy veggies! The sunsets this time of year make for a great end to long days of work. This week I hope we get some rain and i’m going to try and get some green beans planted for late summer and get a lot more weeds pulled and continue to trim and clip tomatoes….. we got the first cherries this week but only two boxes so shouldn’t be long for tomatoes.
Purple Snow Peas: Rather than grow sugar snaps which everyone else grows i opted for these beautiful purple snow peas this year. You can eat them pod and all or cook them for stir fry or a veggie saute. The striking deep purple pods and contrasting green peas inside create a beautiful color contrast.
Swiss Chard: A green of many colors your bunch may include red, white, or candy cane striped pink stems. This saute green is great in place of any recipe you would use spinach in. I like it best in a frittata in the morning with some scrambled eggs but it would make a great spinach pie or calzone also. More beet flavor than spinach but if you remove the stems its less earthy.
Kale: Kale is a staple of the veggie world here and a great source of protein! This curly kale can be shredded or chopped and used for salads or cooked.
Pea Shoots: These sweet and nutritionally dense greens are great for your salads sandwiches and on top of stir fries.
Radish Microgreens: this week we will have these spicy radish greens to go with the sweet peas and surprisingly good on tacos!
Scallions: Fresh and tall green onions are sweet and mild enough to eat raw or minced up fresh on top of your dishes! These also go well with all the other veggies!
I hope everyone has a good week and enjoys all the official beginning of summer. I am expecting fennel, carrots, tomatoes, celery, and more to be ready soon for July shares…
. -I Appreciate you all, Thank you and enjoy -Kyle
