Week nine now, were mid season and the rain came in a blast this week with 80 mph winds but we were well alerted and able to close all the greenhouses up ahead of the storm which was a very dramatic front with a large bow shaped ring cloud billowing out from the storefront. The rain was relieving and welcome and the green beans i planted should sprout well this week after the soaking. microgreens harvests have been going along with the ripening of tomatoes. Im sure you’ll all find ways to cope with the slicers and cherry tomatoes this week but we will mix up the carrot varieties and add some spicy notes to the shares this week as well! Other exciting news…. My daughter turns 18 this week also which is crazy, I started the farm here the year she was born and our first ripe tomato came when I brought her home from the hospital…. nourishing families while building my family has always been the goal so with that here goes the crop list this week which includes….
Radish Microgreens: These spicy greens taste just like a fresh radish and are great on salads, in sandwiches, on tacos, or fish, or on top of ramen stir fry.
Scallions: Still bunching these sweet little spring onions for raw or cooked use they need a little extra love getting cleaned up as they went through drought but taste great so its worth the effort.
Garlic: Freshly dug green garlic for your cooking pleasure…. i love garlic, its the farm logo, and a yearly thing here at the farm every season. This year we lost half our crop over winter but I will plant more and probably give you all most of the garlic this year starting this week! enjoy raw or cooked just remove the wrappers from the cloves as needed which are not yet dry.
Orange Carrots: These tasty sweet and smooth orange carrots are the classic flavor you want in a carrot, sweet with the perfect crunch.
Cherry Tomatoes: Our vine ripened cherry tomatoes are packed in a variety box with orange, red, yellow, yellow grape, pink grape tomatoes. They are picked every other day and grown in a special tomato house I built myself, we pick them every other day to get the best ripeness. One of people favorites from the farm for sure.
Heirloom, slicing tomato: These slicers are great for everything so choosing what to make may be the hard part here, or just use them sliced for a fresh bruschetta style plate.
Zucchini: a little fruit of the zucchini for your italian or whatever type of food your making! I think we are all pretty familiar with this one, I haven’t loaded us up on squash this year as focusing on the not quite so heavy crops is more manageable for me this year. The ones we have though are delish so enjoy however you like to prepare your zucchini.
Chard: Our swiss chard is doing great this year, a nice little crop rotation helped everything grow better. I like sautéing this with eggs for frittatas in the am and basically use it as you would spinach. We have the red stem, white stem and pink stem type growing a little garlic pairs well sautéed with it also.
This week is another long work week for us on the farm but as we pass mid season of CSA its actually been 5 straight months of work. I have sent out second payment links to those of you who need to pay for your second half so please do so this week and thank you to those of you who all ready have and thanks all for helping your farmer stay employed! Thank you all again for your patronage and i’ll see some of you at the drops, have a good week! -Kyle
