What’s in the Box: Heirloom slicing tomatoes, cherry tomato mix (orange,red,yellow,white, black), red cabbage, garlic, summer squash, sweet yellow onion, dragons tongue beans, eggplant, leeks, cucumber, red Italian sweet pepper, Anaheim chile peppers, sage, and serrano chile peppers.
What’s going on at the farm: Harvest season is in full swing yet and we are looking forward to finishing up the season as strong as possible as we enter the last third of the year. Our annual potluck is planned for this weekend and I hope to see a lot of you out here to visit the farm. Harvesting has kept us the most busy by far this week picking cherry tomatoes mostly, but also a late setting of green filet beans and dragons tongue beans. We harvested an amazing crop of red cabbage as well and have it stored up for shares in the coming weeks. Very large sweet and dense heads this year. (Xanax) I recommend trying it broiled with olive oil or with rice noodles, peppers or sweet onion for a tasty stir fry. Red peppers are finally here and very large and sweet at that. The Anaheim chile is a long green and mild chile pepper which is slightly different then other hot peppers in that the heat is in the ribs of the pepper and not the seeds. They are excellent for roasting and Mexican dishes like chile relano where they are stuffed with rice, cheese, beef, beans etc. . All of our onions are now cured so they will store very well on the counter or in the cuboard. I like to store my winter onions at home in a paper bag so they can breath and stay dark and cool. The onions you are receiving now are softer summer onions and will keep for a couple months. Soon fall onions will be distributed and they will store well into winter. They are generally harder, and rounder, with brighter skins. Put some new tines on the tiller this week for better cultivation and ordering more to replace the worn ones which serviced me so well over the last five years. It has been quite a cool dry spell the last few weeks but we finally got some rain to soften up the ground and allow plowing in lots of unused space this week for seeding of turnips, lettuce, arugula, and radishes for fall and late season.
