What’s in the Box: Heirloom slicing tomato (variety), green cabbage, green pepper, garlic, summer squash and zucchini (assorted types), cucumber, serrano chile peppers, mustard greens, sweet yellow onion, eggplant, and red russian kale.
What’s going on at the farm: This last week we got almost two inches of rain along with some amazingly cool fall like weather. We pulled all our summer onions which consists of torpedo onions and sweet yellow onions and they are now curing in the greenhouse over the next week or two. There was more tomato clipping, pruning, and the tomatoes are looking and tasting great. You will have another assortment this week in your shares. Cherry tomatoes may make the box this week as well but they are slow to ripen at this point with the cool nights we have been having lately. Tractor problems put a dent in our ability to plant over the last week but I should have the part repaired this week and we will be up and running again on our planting schedule which includes transplants for a fall crop of beets, cauliflower, brussels, and romanesco cauliflower. Now is the time to plant fall root crops as well and we are planning on planting turnips, carrots, radishes, and fall greens over the next several weeks along with all the transplants. Mustard greens are new this week along with cured garlic and green peppers. The variety of mustard we supply is a frilly mustard which can be used as a salad green. They are sweet and spicy raw but less so cooked or even sprinkled with salad dressing. As always there is plenty of work in harvesting alone this time of year and plenty of variety in supply.
