This week on the farm was a big week as my daughter graduated high school and its been busy prepping for college and finishing up senior year but I still worked a ton, picking crops for hours on end and mowing, weedwacking, hand weeding, trellising and pruning tomatoes, post harvest washing and harvesting and starting Microgreens batches. Growing lots of microgreens this year is a bit of a change but something i do well and working with a broken shoulder choosing lighter crops this year makes it more manageable to get all the work done and focus on what grows well in this cooler weather! This week is lighter in nature but full of freshness and nutrition with lots of salad greens and i’ll be loading you up with lettuce heads because they always come in fast and I want to get them out of the field just before their maturity for best shelf life. The weather has been cool this spring also as i was looking at week 3 last year and we had garlic scapes all ready and this year they haven’t even started yet. Last year berries were ready week 3 but the cool weather and lack of rain have really slowed down spring this year. Thank you for your patience and appreciation of what we do have in these fresh nutritious greens as we patiently wait for more berries and early summer crops.
Mini Red Romaine Lettuce: These deep red heads of romaine are smaller in size but amazing color and flavor and good shelf life. Mix them with the butter crisp and micros for fantastic salad or separately however you choose.
Butter lettuce. – These crispy and buttery inner heads make great salad and the outer leaves make great wraps with turkey and cheese or thai chicken and rice, just be creative and enjoy its buttery flavor and texture.
Kale- curly kale is a protein packed green can give you a lot of good energy to run on with healthy plant proteins and vitamins. Use it massaged with oil for salad or sautéed in oil or butter for other dishes.
Pea Shoots- Microgreens are in for you this week with sweet pea shoots. These are good in salad or at the end of a stir fry try them on top.
Sunflower Shoots: These crunchy and nutty microgreens are good in salads and all, i’m sure you’ve heard me mention they are packed with protiend for a great breakfast also so another thing you can do with them is make a pesto. great on crackers and such.
Radish Micros (large Shares Only) : These spicy micros are great for salads and sandwiches they are spicy and full of nutrition. We are adding these to large shares only this week as an extra for large shareholders.
Thats the lineup for this week folks! Strawberries and kohlrabi and garlic scapes will be coming soon. I will be working hard out here’s always to get all these fresh veggies out the door to you and hope you all have a great week and enjoy the veggies! If I can find enough in the field I may add radishes but they are nearly gone and not as nice as earlier. Thanks all and enjoy! -Kyle
