Hello CSA members! Week five is on the way with higher temps but still no rain for us. The national weather service says we are in a moderate drought in our area of wisconsin and i’m hoping that doesn’t keep trending towards severe. The strawberries have not been producing i’m guessing due to drought and could be some winter damage that occurred also. Its very frustrating considering i’ve spent many hours and around a thousand dollars planting them mulching them and keeping them weeded. hopefully they will still produce late if we can get some moisture but its more likely ill be working towards getting them in better shape for next season. We are working on pruning and clipping all our tomato plants also this week and we planted eggplant and habanada and cayenne pepper this week.
Green onion/ Scallions: These sweet and mild green onions can be used in their entirety any way you like to flavor and garnish your meals.
Kohlrabi: Kohlrabi is a tender and crisp cabbage apple. Thats how i like to describe it… its good raw or cooked and is a member of the brassica family. raw the texture is crisp and the flavor is sweet but cooked it becomes more mild and softer. I’ve used it shredded for slaw, cubed for sautéing, and sliced raw for snacking. We grow three varieties of kohlrabi with different colors like purple, white, and green. I think they all taste pretty similar and CSA members will get a a random choice of variety on these this week.
Curly Kale: This frilly kale is tender and rich, great for salads or sautéed. One of our favorites at home is kale chips but the kale also goes well with rice or beans in many dishes.
Collard Greens: These greens are meant to be slow cooked so I highly recommend doing a little research before preparing these southern style greens.
Broccoli Micro Greens: One of the most nutritious microgreens micro broccoli can fight cancer cells in your body due to it’s potent sulforaphane levels. Besides that interesting fact these are really good sprinkled on your mac and cheese or pasta dishes.
Lettuce Head: The last of our spring lettuce this week is for you all, i won’t be growing much more lettuce until fall so enjoy with your micros and scallions or sliced/grated kohlrabi or use as a gluten free wrap.
Thats it for this week everyone. This is the last week of spring on the farm but it def feels like summer is here with the higher temperatures and humidity. I hope everyone had a great fathers day weekend and thank you for being CSA members and I hope you enjoy the veggies!
