Welcome to week #7 everyone!
It should be noted that since Fitchburg Market was questionable to even be going and we expect very slow traffic on a holiday night………..We are going to move the Fitchburg drop site to West Madison at 305 North meadow Lane for the fourth of July. All shares will be dropped by 9am and I encourage everyone to pick up early and enjoy the rest of their holiday weekend afterwards.
This is obviously only important if you are a Fitchburg or W Madison pick up this season everyone else is good to go but shares will be ready by 9am on farm Thursday also. In other farm news we worked to mulch the strawberry field and remove the old strawberry field this week. Also plenty of harvesting and weeding and washing of the crops as they come in from the field and at the same time, trellising tomatoes, growing micros, and mowing as fast as the grass can grow with all the rain this year. Some early summer crops are starting to come in faster that we worked hard on this spring to have ready by July like tomatoes, carrots, and zucchini! This week we have another nice share for you all including the list below…
Swiss Chard: A saute green related to beets, this green is a great replacement for spinach and commonly mistaken for rhubarb at farmers market.
Sunflower Shoots: These tasty shoots have a nice crunch and nutty flavor that is great for salads, sandwiches, or breakfast greens, large shares will receive double micros this week and get another random type added to their box!
Kohlrabi: We have purple kohlrabi in and this may be the last week for it this year, They are great raw as a snack, grated into salad and coleslaw or cooked.
Zucchini or summer squash. Our squash is enjoying the summer weather and I hope you can use it for some great home cooked meals this week!
Carrots: These tasty orange carrots are great for snacking on which is my favorite way to eat them but roasted or steamed carrots are pretty good too!
Celery: Tasty and crunchy our juicy celery will be sure to be a hit with the whole family, remove the greens to make the stalks last longer but they are great for juicing and I would recommend using it as soon as possible for that perfect crispness and flavor.
Cherry and slicing Tomato: Cherry tomatoes will go out in all shares this week, large shares will also receive heirloom slicing tomato.
That’s all the delicious veggie items coming this week folks, Its possible that I may add a crop like cucumber if there is enough to go around this week but I think they need another week to start producing more. enjoy the bounty of our efforts here at the farm and we will keep on trucking through to bring on the veg! Thank you all for being CSA members, have a great holiday weekend and enjoy the Veg! -Kyle
