Hello CSA members!
This week on the farm we did so much, picking berries for hours on end and mowing, weedwackin, hand weeding, trellising and pruning tomatoes, post harvest washing and harvesting and starting micro batches. This wet weather has made for fast weed growth and increased insect pressure. We got a new strawberry field planted also with 2000 new berry plants! Now as summer brings the end of school season we will focus in on the crops and preparing for late summer and even fall plantings and continue working hard to manage the weeds and bring in the fresh crops for you all! This week we will feature the following crops for you in shares including strawberries!!!
Romaine leaf lettuce. – These crispy heads of romaine make a great salad of any kind.
Kale- curly kale is a protein packed green can give you a lot of good energy to run on with healthy plant proteins and vitamins. Use it massaged with oil for salad or sautéed in oil or butter for other dishes.
Strawberries- You all know what they are and everyone loves them. These are picked vine ripe and at the sweetest we can get them so do try to eat them soon to enjoy the best vine ripe flavors. We pick these daily to get the best quality we can. Its been really dry so not much spotting or damage in the field. great with some vanilla ice cream or caramel and whipped cream or just plain as they are.
Pea Shoots- Microgreens are in for you this week with sweet pea shoots. These are good in salad or at the end of a stir fry try them on top.
Kohlrabi- a german favorite the name means cabbage apple, these are sweet and crunchy and you can slice them to eat raw and peel the thin skin off or grate it for slaw or salads.
Garlic Scapes These shoots of the garlic plant are so good sautéed or grilled in a foil pack as I just had them for dinner. You could make a pesto or garlic paste with them also using a blender and oil or a salad dressing in similar fashion.
Spinach- the last of our spring spinach harvest should go great with berries for a strawberry spinach salad or my favorite lately has been spinach alfredo with linguine and white sauce. Some garlic scapes would be good with that also.
Thats the lineup for this week folks! . We will be working hard out here through the heat to get all these fresh veggies out the door to you and hope you all have a great week and enjoy the veggies! -Kyle
