Roots Down Community Farm

Roots Down Community Farm is a small 2-acre MOSA certified organic CSA and market farm. Growing organic produce for locals in Southern Wisconsin (Madison and Milton area) since 2007. Our produce is mostly sold in CSA or community-supported agriculture shares directly to families, at markets, and a small amount to restaurants and retailers. Our CSA program allows our small family farm to connect with your family providing you with the freshest organic produce grown right here in Wisconsin. In turn marketing to local families keeps the money spent locally, creates jobs on the farm, and overall just keeps more per dollar in the farmers’ hands providing an honest wage for the hard labor involved.

CSA shares available fall to early spring please check out our website (you can now signup online), e-mail or call with questions. You can also find us at East Side Market in Madison on Tuesdays at Central Park. Fitchburg Farmers Market at the Agora pavilion on Thursdays, or at the Dane County Farmers Market on Saturdays.

Our Philosophy

Roots Down philosophy begins with sustainable methods for a biologically healthy system of growing. The land is worked minimally with respect and care using certified organic materials and techniques that sustain and build the soil supporting its long term health and ultimately our nutrient-dense chemical-free produce.

We achieved organic certification in 2009 through MOSA (Midwest Organic Services Association), a USDA accredited certification agency, to provide you with quality assured organic, GMO-free produce. With two acres under cultivation, our operation is quality driven and locally oriented providing personal care in the growth, handling, and delivery of our produce while reducing environmental impact. All of our produce is distributed within 30 miles of the farm and we diversify by vending at local farmers markets which also serve as CSA drop sites (excluding DCFM) in Madison these other sales outlets include East Side Farmers Market, Fitchburg Farmers Market, and Saturday mornings at Dane County Farmers Market. We are also a FairShare CSA Coalition endorsed farm and proud to support organic CSA farming as a sustainable food system and way of life for farms and families alike.

Our CSA program offers members a share in our season’s harvest and a direct connection from our small family farm to your family resulting in a sustainable local food system.  As a member of the farm your season-long commitment supports our ability to grow and in turn, provides you with the bounty of our efforts and supports your health.

Enjoy the freshest seasonal produce over the course of twenty weeks from June to October. Members will receive an array of seasonal produce each week ranging from 8-16 different varieties of produce. We offer resources on produce identification by photo in our veggie ID section along with recipes, nutritional information, and storage tips on our interactive web site and weekly newsletter. Shares will vary in weight and variety at the farmers’ discretion from spring to fall due to the nature of the seasonal produce but providing you with a balanced portion of more popular vegetables is our goal.  Eating with the seasons overall is an incredibly healthy and fresh choice for the whole family and most of our produce is harvested, washed, cooled, and delivered the very same day that you receive it in your share.

CSA Shares can be delivered to Janesville, and East-Central Madison on Tuesdays, Fitchburg, Oregon, and Near West Madison on Thursdays, or picked up at the farm on either pick up day.

We will also host on-farm events this season for our CSA members, including a late summer harvest potluck. Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions on our CSA program or to arrange a visit to the farm.
