Hello members,
Week #1 CSA had us moving a lot of greens. This week will be very similar with plenty of greens still in season and the early summer crops not quite ready yet. We are patiently awaiting the first strawberries and started to see some color change this week. We pulled a lot of weeds on our carrots, lettuce, kale, and trimmed all the tomatoes and clipped them up. I molded beds for peppers and eggplant, and plowed the rented land. I also planted sweet corn and green beans. Today we will plant peppers and then the delivery week begins. This weeks offerings will include.
Joi-Choi – this asiatic cabbage family vegetable has crispy white stems, and rich dark green leaves. They are great sautéed, steamed, or grilled if you wrap them up. Don’t overcook the stems too long if you like the crisp texture. They are easy to clean once you cut the base off and allow the leaves to separate.
Spinach – The last of the spring spinach will be in your shares but less then last week, cook it down or use it for salads
Turnip – These Hakurei turnips are a sweet japanese type with edible greens but the roots is the best part and tender enough for salads or can be used as a cooked root vegetable.
Pea shoots – These micro greens are our most popular micro and good for use as a salad or sautéed green
Lettuce mix – this weeks salad mix is a green and red leaf blend of all lettuce. great for salads.
Lettuce head – This week you will receive a butter crunch lettuce head in either a red or green type or possibly both if you have a large share. These are my favorite lettuce because of the creamy blanched centers which make an amazing wedge salad and the bib outer leaves are great for breadless wraps or fresh spring rolls.
I hope everyone has their favorite salad dressings and stir fry recipes ready for this healthy week of spring greens. Remember bi-weekly members are off this week. Market share members I will be at Madison’s E Side Farmers Market On Tuesday and Fitchburg Market on Thursday if you want to come pick out some veggies we will have all the items listed above at market. The address and times for those markets are listed on the main page of our website. Thank you all and I’ll see some of you at the drop sites. Have a great week. -Kyle
