What’s Going on at the Farm:
This week on the farm is another scorcher. It is difficult just to keep up steam with the heat this time of year but we are working hard at opening up areas for fall greens and roots to be planted as we speak along with picking and harvesting on a daily basis. Still battling weeds to keep them from seeding around the food plots as this creates problems in future seasons and it is very important for us to not let them go to seed. I have been getting lots of suggestions on new recipes lately so don’t forget to share on of your summer favorites with others using our new on-line recipe submission feature on the web site. Our first on farm event and third annual summer potluck will be coming up this month as well on Aug. 28th. We had a lot of fun last year so try to make it if you can. If anyone wants to play music or anything that would be fun too and since we grow at several locations I will be willing to take some groups around to the rental land as well for tours and short hikes.
This weeks list is a best guess for sure, we may harvest yellow onions instead of leeks and with the garlic will probably do one or the other instead of including three allium family crops in one week. Also not real sure on the cucumber right now as we have had some exceptional difficulty with the always pesky cucumber beetle this year. Other items you may find in your share this week may include purple bell peppers, and hot peppers. We have a lot of food coming in people! Our rainbow cherry tomato mix includes white, yellow, orange, green, and black cherries. Also on the tomato variety list are red mini roma tomatoes which may or may not make the box this week. Our eggplant is either classic black italian, violet italian, violet asian, or striped indian as well just in case you were wondering 🙂 In other news our cantaloupe crop is looking awesome while the watermelon seems to be on the poor end of the melon chain this year. The extreme heat and lack of rain had a lot to do with this and although watermelon likes heat it also requires a lot of water which it did not receive enough of. We will see how this turns out, we will likely still have it at some point but they will be smaller than last year. Thanks everyone and happy eating!
